After deciding that you would like your child to learn Spanish, the next step is choosing a great Spanish tutor for children.
This can be a daunting task, as children have different needs than adults. How can you decide who is the ideal Spanish tutor to accompany your child on their Spanish language learning journey? This blog post will hopefully help guide you to making the right decision.
Age Appropriate Spanish Tutor for Children
Not every teacher is a “one-size-fits-all”. When “shopping” for Spanish tutor for your child, make sure the teacher has experience and, above all, enjoys teaching children the same age as your son or daughter. There is a big difference between teaching five-year-olds, eight-year-olds and 10-year-olds.
Five-year-old children love to be silly. They need to move around, be active and can get very easily distracted. Choosing a very dynamic and energetic Spanish tutor for this age group is a necessity. At eight-years-old, children tend to as active. They can sit for a bit longer, but still want to have fun. They don’t want to be treated as babies, but they still do want to have fun. Choosing a teacher with a great sense of humor can be a great fit for an eight-year-old. Children who are 10 and over want to be treated as adults. They want to be “cool” and develop connections with their teachers. Choosing a Spanish tutor who can really connect with your tween and talk about issues that interest them is key.
Kid’s Club Spanish School’s online classes are geared towards children aged 5-13. All of our teachers have experience with this age group but there are specific teachers that just do better with certain age groups. Write our Studies Coordinators to ask them what teachers they recommend for your child’s age group.
An Available, Consistent and Ideal Schedule
An obvious point might be to make sure your chosen Spanish tutor is available, at the time and day that is convenient for you, but it is also necessary to ensure that this will consistently be true and that the tutor is not suddenly unavailable. Consistency for children is important and knowing they will see the same faces can help them be better prepared mentally for class and take full advantage of the time.
It could be a good idea to choose two Spanish tutors for your child, so that you have more flexibility. Switching off between one and the other allows your child to become familiar with more than just one face and feel comfortable with both tutors. In this case, if one is unavailable you can book with the other without disruption.
Make sure you are also scheduling the classes at a time that your child is ready to learn. If they are tired or hungry they will not be able to concentrate in the same way as they would being well rested and fed. Make sure the tutors chosen have availability at your child’s ideal learning time.
At Kids’ Club Spanish School scheduling is so easy. You can schedule by teacher or date depending on what you consider more important. You can choose two or three teachers to rotate through in order to ensure flexibility in scheduling and we have tutors giving classes 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Our class curriculum is standardized, meaning all teachers teach off the same slides and your child’s Spanish classes will be continuous regardless of which teacher they take class from.
Accent and Dialect
There are many different Spanish accents and dialects, since the language is spoken in many different countries in the world. But let’s not be mistaken, it is still one language and if you speak one dialect you will be understood by all other Spanish speakers. This means that sticking to learning one dialect, or accent, is not necessary, and can, in fact, be a handicap. Imagine your child, one day is in a board meeting and a Spanish speaker enters the room to give a speech. If your child has only ever listened to Mexican Spanish and this person is Colombian, your child will have quite the challenge understanding what is being said. Think of an American English speaker who has never heard a Scottish person speak. This is even more true when learning a foreign language. It could be a good idea to choose a couple Spanish tutors for your child, from different areas in the world, so that they can get an ear, at an early age, for different accents. Many concerns about confusing a child with different words with the same meaning are unfounded. Children can easily understand that in one Spanish speaking country they say “carro” for car, and in another they say “coche”. Kids are smart cookies.
Kids’ Club Spanish School is proud of its wide variety of Spanish speaking tutors. We recommend that students try out a few, in order to develop an ear for different accents, making them more flexible in their listening skills from the very beginning.
Teacher Credentials
Ensure the tutors you are considering have the appropriate studies to be able to effectively teach Spanish. Ask them about their training, experience, and references. It is important that the tutor is certified in some way and has expertise in Spanish. They should be native speakers but also have studies in teaching. A native speaker, who does not know how to teach the subject, is not qualified to transfer their knowledge of the language to your child in an effective manner. They should have the knowledge of the language, teacher training and experience, in order to correctly tutor a child in Spanish.
Kids’ Club Spanish School takes charge of the task of ensuring teachers are aptly qualified to teach children. We only hire native Spanish speakers who have college studies and some sort of teacher training. They should also have experience teaching children. If you choose to take classes with one of our Spanish tutors you can rest assured that every tutor on our platform has been vetted for these qualifications.
Edutainers
Teaching children can be a challenge. Young students need an equal amount ratio of teaching to entertainment to really enjoy class and want to keep learning. If your chosen Spanish tutor understands what Edutainment is and and is able to incorporate different aspects of this methodology into the lesson, half of the work is done.
A teacher who implements edutainment into their classes is the ideal match for a young student.
Kids’ Club Spanish School only hires edutainers. We hire dynamic personalities who also hold education studies certificates and we then train them in our method. They use visual aids, props and their energy to hold the children’s attention for the 25-minute class. Our teachers truly bring education and entertainment together to ensure a truly memorable experience in every class.
